This holiday, we witnessed a powerful reminder of what’s possible when a community comes together.
Over the past year, Kayla Jensen and her family have faced unimaginable challenges. In late September, what began as a routine sinus infection for her 12-year-old son, Braxten, quickly became a life-threatening emergency. Within hours, Braxten underwent emergency brain surgery. Since then, he has endured multiple brain, sinus, and eye surgeries, temporary paralysis, and continues to face mobility challenges that require frequent trips to Portland for ongoing care and therapy.
During this incredibly difficult time, Kayla has spent months living hours away from home—balancing medical appointments, financial strain, and caregiving for her family. Compounding these challenges was the loss of reliable transportation. Their vehicle was no longer safe, wouldn’t start consistently, and could not accommodate Braxten’s wheelchair.
That’s why the 3rd Annual Car Giveaway, in partnership with Underriner Ford and Underriner Nissan of The Dalles, meant so much. This gift is more than a car, it is peace of mind. It means safe transportation to critical medical appointments, the ability to return to work, and a renewed sense of stability after months of uncertainty.
We are deeply grateful to the entire team at Underriner Ford and Underriner Nissan of The Dalles, Washington Gorge Action Programs (WAGAP), and our nonprofit partners who nominated community members in need of reliable transportation. A special thank-you as well to Santa Dave Glommen for adding a joyful surprise to an already unforgettable moment.
This is the joy of giving.
This is gratitude in action.
This is what happens when a community shows up for one another.
Together, we are building hope—one family at a time.
